Missing presence indicator on some

I have a bunch of contacts in my Rainbow client where I never get a presence indicator. E.g. a work colleague whom I added through an invitation (he only signed up through that invitation).. after he connected and joined my bubble, when I restarted my client I got his proper name and image, but no presence indicator. He does not show up in my network though for some reason.

And I have another contact that suddenly lost its presence bubble.

What could explain that behavior?
